light And Darkness
Heart of Darkness In just the opening pages of Heart of Darkness, Conradââ¬â¢s ability as a writer becomes abundantly clear, for the subliminal nature of his writing is constantly sustained. Conrad begins Marlowââ¬â¢s journey into the heart of darkness on the Thames, on the yawl, ââ¬ËNellieââ¬â¢ with a short prologue, which contains subtle use of imagery and a brilliant suggestion of the atmosphere that prepares a reader for the prevailing themes of the novel. Each setting in the novel is in fact a microcosm of the larger construction of Heart of Darkness, and a reader is continually reminded by the repetition of the phrase ââ¬Å"brooding gloomâ⬠, the noun ââ¬Å"hazeâ⬠, and the adjective ââ¬Å"darkâ⬠that the novel is full mystery and exploration through the impenetrable darkness, as it were. As a reader transgresses through the novel, he or she is continually taken back to the paradoxical title, Heart of Darkness. The title in itself is very suggestive, for the noun ââ¬Ëheartââ¬â¢ is, in a literal sense, characteristic of pure or white substance, and is very distinct, and on a metaphorical level it conveys that the novel works on an emotional scale. On the other hand, the adjective ââ¬Å"darknessâ⬠displays something much more inconclusive and equivocal, just like Marlow. Therefore, a readerââ¬â¢s first expectations are rather inexpressible because one is put a half-state, where the clear literal meaning of ââ¬Å"heartâ⬠is set against the ambiguity of the ââ¬Å"darknessâ⬠. The ââ¬Å"darknessâ⬠in the novel works on both the characters and the readers, where it highlights the states of confusion and incomprehension of the mind. Biography of Henri Rousseau, Self-Taught Post-Impressionist
Biography of Henri Rousseau, Self-Taught Post-Impressionist Henri Rousseau (May 21, 1844 ââ¬â September 2, 1910) was a French painter in the post-impressionist era. He started painting late in life and was roundly mocked in his own time, but was later recognized as a genius and became an influence on later avant-garde artists. Fast Facts: Henri Rousseau Full Name:à Henri Julien Fà ©lix RousseauOccupation: Artist; tax/toll collectorBorn: May 21, 1844 in Laval, FranceDied: September 2, 1910 in Paris, FranceKnown For: Almost entirely self-taught and rarely praised in his lifetime, Rousseaus naive style of painting inspired many future artists and has come to be widely respected in more contemporary times.Spouses:à Clà ©mence Boitardà (m. 1869ââ¬â1888), Josephine Nouryà (m. 1898ââ¬â1910)Children: Julia Rousseau (only daughter that survived infancy) Working Class Origins Henri Julien Fà ©lix Rousseau was born in Laval, the capital of the Mayenne region of France. His father was a tinsmith, and he had to work alongside his father from the time he was a young boy. As a youth, he attended the local Laval High School, where he was mediocre in some subjects but excelled in creative disciplines such as music and drawing, even winning awards. Eventually, his father went into debt and the family was forced to give up their house; at this time, Rousseau began boarding at the school full-time. After high school, Rousseau attempted to start a career in law. He worked for a lawyer and began his studies, but when he was involved in an incident of perjury, he had to abandon that career path. Instead, he enlisted in the army, serving four years from 1863 to 1867. In 1868, his father died, leaving Rousseau to support his widowed mother. He left the army, moved to Paris, and instead took up a government post, working as a toll and tax collector. Rousseau was known as Le Douanier (the Customs Officer) after his place of work. Essentially self-taught, Rousseaus naive primitive style of painting was widely ridiculed during his lifetime although he later came to be seen as an artist of considerable significance. Print Collectorà /à Getty Images That same year, Rousseau married his first wife, Clà ©mence Boitard. She was his landlordââ¬â¢s daughter and, being only fifteen years old, was nine years his junior. The couple had six children together, but only one survived, their daughter Julia Rousseau (born 1876). A few years into their marriage, in 1871, Rousseau took on a new post, collecting taxes on goods coming into Paris (a specific tax called the octroi). Early Exhibits Starting in 1886, Rousseau began exhibiting artwork in the Salon des Indà ©pendants, a Paris salon founded in 1884 that counted Georges Seurat among its founders. The salon was formed as a response to the rigidity of the government-sponsored Salon, which focused heavily on traditionalism and was less than welcoming to artistic innovations. This was a perfect fit for Rousseau, although his work was not displayed in places of prominence within the exhibitions. Rousseau was almost entirely self-taught, although he admitted to having received some ââ¬Å"adviceâ⬠from Fà ©lix Auguste Clà ©ment and Jean-Là ©on Gà ©rà ´me, a pair of painters from the Academic style. For the most part, though, his artwork came all from his own self-training. He painted nature scenes, as well as developing a particular take on the portrait landscape, in which he would paint a particular scene, then place a person in the foreground. His style lacked some of the polished technique of other artists of the time, leading to him being labeled as a ââ¬Å"naà ¯veâ⬠painter and often disdained by critics. Painting by Henri Rousseau. Surprise, 1891. Buyenlargeà /à Getty Images In 1888, Rousseauââ¬â¢s wife Clà ©mence died, and he spent the next ten years single. His art slowly began to grow a following, and in 1891, Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!) was exhibited and earned his first major review with serious praise from fellow artist Felix Vallotton. In 1893, Rousseau moved to a studio in the art-centric neighborhood of Montparnasse, where he would live for the rest of his life. Ongoing Career in Paris Rousseau formally retired from his government job in 1893, ahead of his fiftieth birthday, and devoted himself to his artistic pursuits. One of Rousseauââ¬â¢s most famous works, The Sleeping Gypsy, was first seen in 1897. The following year, Rousseau remarried, a decade after losing his first wife. His new wife, Josephine Noury, was, like him, on her second marriage- her first husband had died. The couple had no children, and Josephine died only four years later, in 1892. Painting by Henri Rousseau. Sleeping Gypsy, 1897. à Buyenlarge / Getty Images In 1905, Rousseau returned to his earlier themes with another large-scale jungle painting. This one, titled The Hungry Lion Throws Itself on the Antelope, was exhibited once again at the Salon des Indà ©pendants. It was placed near works by a group of younger artists who were leaning more and more avant-garde; one of the future stars whose work was shown near Rousseauââ¬â¢s was Henri Matisse. In retrospect, the grouping was considered the first showing of Fauvism. The group, ââ¬Å"the Fauves,â⬠may have even gotten the inspiration for their name from his painting: the name ââ¬Å"les fauvesâ⬠is French for ââ¬Å"the wild beasts.â⬠Rousseauââ¬â¢s reputation continued to climb within the artistic community, although he never quite made it to the uppermost echelons. In 1907, however, he received a commission from Berthe, Comtesse de Delauney- the mother of fellow artist Robert Delauney- to paint a work that ended up being The Snake Charmer. His inspirations for the jungle scenes were not, contrary to rumors, from seeing Mexico during his time in the army; he never went to Mexico. The Snake Charmer, 1907. Artist: Rousseau. à Heritage Images / Getty Images In 1908, Pablo Picasso discovered one of Rousseauââ¬â¢s paintings being sold on the street. He was struck by the painting and immediately went to find and meet Rousseau. Delighted with the artist and the art, Picasso proceeded to throw a half-serious, half-parody banquet in Rousseauââ¬â¢s honor, called Le Banquet Rousseau. The evening featured many of the prominent figures in the creative community of the time, not for a glittering celebration, but more of a meeting of the creative minds with one another in celebration of their art. In hindsight, it was considered one of the most significant social events of its time. Declining Health and Legacy Rousseauââ¬â¢s final painting, The Dream, was exhibited in 1910 by the Salon des Indà ©pendants. That month, he suffered from an abscess on his leg, but ignored the inflammation until it became too far gone. He was not admitted to the hospital until August, and by then, his leg had become gangrenous. After having surgery for his leg, he developed a blood clot and died from it on September 2, 1910. The Dream (1910). Museum of Modern Art, New York. Fine Artà /à Getty Images Despite being criticized during his life, Rousseauââ¬â¢s style was hugely influential on the next generation of avant-garde artists, such as Picasso, Fernand Leger, Max Beckmann, and the whole surrealist movement. Poets Wallace Stevens and Sylvia Plath also drew inspiration from Rousseauââ¬â¢s paintings, as did songwriter Joni Mitchell. In perhaps the most unexpected connection: one of Rousseauââ¬â¢s paintings inspired the visual world of the animated film Madagascar. His work continues to be displayed to this day, where it is studied and admired much more than it ever was during his own life. School finance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
School finance - Essay Example Financial resources are required in order to run schools. Funding for education varies from state to state as well as district to district. The state has an obligation to fund education and this is mainly done through taxes. On the local level, the districts also have a duty to fund education and the funds are drawn from the taxpayerââ¬â¢s money. There are various obstacles that impact on the funding of education. For instance, the 2007 Global Financial Crisis negatively impacted on the funding of education in different states in the US. There have also been challenges in funding education such as the aspect of equity among different states. Some states are wealthier than others and this has drawn the ire of other people who have filed lawsuits to have this anomaly corrected. There are also challenges faced at the district level in terms of funding of education. While an effort is made to get more money for schools, there are other challenges that are encountered. These are related to how the money is spent in schools in an equitable way. Some money is spent on teacher incentives but this has also raised some eyebrows as a result of the fact that funding meant for education should be used as such. These extra costs have resulted in debts being incurred which pose challenges on managing budgets meant for education. Therefore, concerted efforts should be made by the Legislature to come up with holistic measures that can be implemented in order to ensure that money meant for education is used for that purpose.

Mary Whiton Calkins was the first woman to be elected as president of the American Psychological Association in 1905. The majority of her adult life was dedicated to her work in the development of ââ¬Å"psychology of selves.â⬠She was very passionate about the relatively ââ¬Ënewââ¬â¢ world of psychology and was highly active in the field of philosophy. Mary Whiton Calkins was not deterred in her ambitions because she was a woman, instead she used her struggles to gain a voice and to speak out against the oppression of women during the 1920ââ¬â¢s. à à à à à Born in 1863 to a Presbyterian minister and his wife, she grew up in a very tight-knit family as the oldest of five children. In 1880, the family moved to Massachusetts where they settled and built a home. Maryââ¬â¢s father wanted the best for his daughter, and designed and supervised Maryââ¬â¢s education until she graduated in 1882. Upon graduation, Mary attended Smith College with an advanced standing as a sophomore. Memory Management Comparison Essay
When discussing the differences in memory management practices between Windows and Linux environments, an understanding of what they do is necessary. Memory management systems are core aspects of operating systems. Managing a memory hierarchy of random access memory (RAM) and available hard disks is only its basic function. They perform other critical tasks such as the allocation and de-allocation of memory for processes that take care of logistics and implementing virtual memory via the hard disk to perform as additional RAM. Maximum optimization of the memory system is crucial as it greatly affects the overall speed and performance of the system. An important concept in memory management is virtual memory. The basic idea behind this is providing an application the illusion of the presence of large amounts of memory available for use. This is made possible as the kernel makes use of secondary storage (hard disk) to fulfill extra memory requirements. Virtual memory requires mapping functions to do address translation ââ¬â converting physical addresses to virtual addresses. The virtual being the location the application refers to, and the physical being the actual memory location; this is generally a paging or segmentation function, but can be both, depending on the kernel, processor architecture and its state. To begin a comprehensive comparison of memory management systems of Windows and Linux, let us first analyze the data structures used to keep track of and maintain virtual memory. Windows uses a tree form system where each node of the tree is called Virtual Address Descriptors (VAD). VADs denote a range of address that has the same commit state information and protection parameters. This tree is a balanced to keep the depth of the tree at a minimum. This allows the search time when finding a node containing a location to be kept relatively low. Nodes can be marked one of three ways, committed, free, or reserved. Committed nodes represent ones that have had code or data mapped to it. Free nodes are not yet used; reserved nodes are used in special cases. In Linux systems, virtual memory is kept in a linked list structure. This list is a structure that represents continuous areas of memory having the identical protection parameters. The structure records the address range it is mapped onto, whether it is pinned in memory, the direction it will grow in, and the protection mode. Whether the area the public or private is also recorded. This linked list also converts into a tree list if the number of entries exceeds a particular number. This method uses the best structure in the best situations. These two systems while originating in different backgrounds (Windows ââ¬âcommercial setting, Linux ââ¬â hacker setting), have modern and theoretically sound concepts which are suitable for production environments. Both systems have many things in common with few technical differences. Windows has gone through more thought and effort during its design/development with decisions at various levels being made to better performance. While in the case of Linux, these decisions were often favoring simplicity instead of performance. This caused Windows to be developed into complex and sophisticated code whereas Linux is elegant and simple while still being modern.

Physical Beauty vs Inner Beauty
Physical Beauty vs. Inner Beauty Beauty is an aspect; a characteristic that a person has which can be defined as anything that appeals the other person. Let it be your personality, your looks or even your habits, beauty can have various forms. Similarly, we have physical beauty, which can be a personââ¬â¢s elegance, features, figure, or complexion, and inner beauty can be your personality traits, your habits or even your sense of humor. The definition of beauty keeps on changing based on what every individual perceives. Scientific research showed that physical beauty was usually defined when a person had the face structure that was close to being symmetrical; he/she was often referred to as being beautiful. Inner beauty is a concept that is related to the intellect or other factors that pleases other people. Usually, people who have pure intentions towards others and can serve to be role models are said to have inner beauty. The difference between both types of beauty is evident but when it comes to applying it practically, inner beauty leads the way. Even if you look at the way we run now a days if you find someone physically appealing and you personally know him or her and the personality that they have, you are the best judge of their character. One may be beautiful from the outside, but beauty lies within the person not outside. Even if the person is an epitome of beauty, an appalling personality will erase any type of loveliness they have on his or her face. The same is the case with those who are beautiful on the inside, they may not be beautiful on the outside, but their personality is such that they are still appealing to those who know them. They may be the personification of physical beauty but what lies inside is what matters the most at the end of the day. Vanity, greed, jealous or the other sins may come to any person in any form but knowing who you are is the important factor in life. Therefore, inner beauty wins this argument when it comes to being practical, it is the person that you are which matters to people not the way you look. Even though looks do count to an extent, if you have the traits of a lovable person, no looks can match up to it. It is the purity within that out shines on the face and if their insides are not ntainted, it is bound to show to the people, despite the looks that you may have. Beauty may be in the eyes of the beholder, but it is equally true that every culture has standards for physical attractiveness- standards that can have tremendous influence in many areas of our lives. Although we know that it is who we are on the inside that really counts, we cannot dismiss the role outward charac teristics- particularly facial features- play in forming personal relationships, being accepted into social groups and opening doors to careers and other opportunities. Today, we are divided into races and cultures and are spread all around the world. Our features and intellect may be the same, but there is always a factor in everyone that makes them distinctive from others. When both these types of beauties play important parts, one can never decide which is more important. Everyone takes these matters in different ways but the fact remains the same, inner beauty contributes the most in the practical life. Outer beauty normally refers to your outer physical appearance the way you dress, walk, talk; every action that you make can be defined as ââ¬Å"outer beautyâ⬠. Inner beauty on the other hand refers mostly to how kind hearted, friendly or your sensibilities and weather you are at peace with yourself. References Www. Essay on Scarface Then and Now
Essay on Scarface Then and Now Essay on Scarface: Then and Now Essay on Scarface: Then and NowScarface (1932) is the film that uncovers the tragic story of rising a gangster to power and the tragic end of his life, when he is shot down by the police, while he attempted to flee from his home and break through the police siege. The film seems to be extremely violent, even excessively violent from the contemporary standpoint. On the other hand, the film contains implications for sexually explicit scenes, which though are never shown in the film. Therefore, Scarface is the film that focuses on the violence and eliminates any moral and social boundaries of violent behavior but still remains ethically rigid in the depiction of sexually explicit scenes.à à à à à à à à à à à Sexually explicit scenes in the film are rather implicit and are not shown in the film in the way they would be shown in a present day film. For example, the visit of Poppy to Tonyââ¬â¢s gaudy apartment gives implications to the continuation of the sexual s cene to follow the visit, but the film winds up the scene without the explicit continuation. Instead, a contemporary film would likely to continue the scene ending up with a sexually explicit scene of Tony and Poppy having love.à à à à à à à à à à à The violence is amply presented throughout the film. In fact, from the beginning the main character of the film, Tony manifests his inclination to use violence to resolve all problems. For example, he obtains promotion and becomes Jonnyââ¬â¢s lieutenant after killing a Mafioso, who controlled the Southern side of the city, Big Louis Costillo.à à à à à à à à à à à Furthermore, the film continues to cover the violent nature of Tonyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëbusiness as he takes control over bars and come into clashes with other gangsters. The film is full of violent scenes depicting the murder of gangsters as well as civilians. For example, the scene, when Guino kills Oââ¬â¢Hara, the leader of the Irish gang that controlled the North of the city. Another violent scene is slaughtering of Irish gangsters in the garage by gangsters impersonating police officers.à à à à à à à à à à à At the same time, the film shows violent scenes which refer not only to the impersonal slaughter of numerous gangsters but it also uncovers the family tragedy of the main character, which also involves the extremely violent scene, when the sister of Tony is killed by a stray bullet. On the other hand, this scene is preceded by another violent scene, when Tony kills his friend, Guino, after seeing him with his sister, being unaware of their secret marriage. In fact, such violent acts have a profound impact on the audience because of the personal tragedy of each character involved in these scenes. They are not some gangsters, whom Tony does not know but they are people, who are very close to him, closest people, as the matter of fact. This is why such violent scenes have a partic ularly strong emotional constraint and the audience grows more and more involved in the film. Moreover, while watching these films, the audience has emotional turmoil since, on the one hand, the audience is shocked by extreme, apparently excessive and unreasonable violence, as was the case of Guinoââ¬â¢s murder, and occasional, unreasonable and illogical killing of Tonyââ¬â¢s sister by a stray bullet.à à à à à à à à à à à Thus, the film turns out to be extremely violent, even for the present audience. On the other hand, sexually explicit scenes are underperformed in the film from the contemporary standpoint.
