The Real Id Act - 994 Words

There is no doubt that the attacks on 9/11 caused Congress to pass the Real ID Act in order to prevent foreign nationals from fraudulently obtaining a U.S. driver’s license. Congress said the Real ID Act is about security, not stigmas. The law was intended to set principles for states that issue licenses and to procure acceptable documents. However, due to budgets, there are not enough resources to verify the accuracy of these documents from foreign countries. This is based solely on three 9/11 hijackers being able to obtain state identification cards while using fictitious documents. In total, thirty three hijackers acquired state driver’s licenses. Unfortunately, stern stipulations have gradually decreased due to several states and local governments allowing Identification cards to be issued without distinguishing from an authentic driver’s license (Jeunesse, 2015). This allows for illegal immigrants with fake identifications to pass off their cards as driver’s license at the airport and another other place, which creates a major security gap. Advocates for illegal immigrants have opposed parts of the law that require â€Å"noncompliant† cards for undocumented workers to look different than licenses for U.S. citizens and legal residents according to Jeunesse. Sir Phillip Sidney's Sonnet # 47 From Astrophil And Stella Sir Phillip Sidney's Sonnet # 47 from Astrophil and Stella The sonnet is a short concise form of writing and it takes a great mind to master it. By mastering it, I mean to be able to say so much in what seems like so little space. Sir Phillip Sidney comes as close to mastering it as anyone else in his time or any other does. As the opening line says, this is about a betrayal. Strangely enough, the last line of the sonnet ends with a word that is the very essence of betrayal. The sonnet ends with the word, lie. This would cause one to expect to get an explanation of the betrayal between the first and last lines. This appears to be a story of both love and betrayal. In the sonnet, it is love that betrays. The narrator opens the sonnet with a question to himself. He wants to know if he has betrayed his own liberty or his freedom. The next three lines of this quatrain use imagery of slavery. The narrator is struggling in knowing if he were born free or if he were born a slave to this love. He raises a question in the closing line of the quatrain, if anyone can handle the confines of love and the boundaries it seems to place on a person. The first quatrain uses such dark imagery that for Americans today brings up thoughts of the Civil War. The fact is, slavery as Americans today think of it was not around in Sidney's time. He wrote Astrophil and Stella around three hundred years before the Civil War. Also, the way Sidney lays out the first quatrain is peculiar. A single line that is not indented is placed, followed by a couplet that Sidney indents, which is then followed by the last line that is not indented. The same format is used in the next quatrain as well. In this quatrain, the imagery is still dark but shifts from slavery to more of personal feelings. The narrator is questioning whether he wants to have sense enough to feel the misery that he is in. In the second, line is questions whether he wants the spirit to show that he despises his love. He has wanted her for a long time and he is in misery without her, he is in this deep misery and the only thing he has is his despise for begging. The third quatrain is different from the first two in its format. The first line is indented and the other three are not. This would cause one to think that this line is set apart for a reason. The first two words say why, it is an exclamation to wake up. It is meant to stand out much like a mother coming into a child's room and yelling wake up very early in the morning. Here, the narrator is telling Virtue within himself to awake. He wants to do the right thing. He realizes that although this girl is beautiful, he does not love her and he must let her go. It is not fair to hold on to someone in a relationship or in the words of the first quatrain, keep someone a slave to you, if you do not love them. This is a commentary from over four hundred years ago that is still true in relationships today. Today, people will date or stay together in an unhealthy relationship for stupid reasons or superficial reasons and either one or both of the people do not love the other. The last couplet, the closing lines of the sonnet, also tell the story of relationships today. In the beginning of the relationship he thought that he may have been in love with her. He lied by telling her that he did love her and now, after all of the struggle, his heart is starting to see the fact that he is indeed not in love with her, that it has just been tricked or has been following his tongue, which has been lying to her. Heart of Darkness In just the opening pages of Heart of Darkness, Conrad’s ability as a writer becomes abundantly clear, for the subliminal nature of his writing is constantly sustained. Conrad begins Marlow’s journey into the heart of darkness on the Thames, on the yawl, ‘Nellie’ with a short prologue, which contains subtle use of imagery and a brilliant suggestion of the atmosphere that prepares a reader for the prevailing themes of the novel. Each setting in the novel is in fact a microcosm of the larger construction of Heart of Darkness, and a reader is continually reminded by the repetition of the phrase â€Å"brooding gloom†, the noun â€Å"haze†, and the adjective â€Å"dark† that the novel is full mystery and exploration through the impenetrable darkness, as it were. As a reader transgresses through the novel, he or she is continually taken back to the paradoxical title, Heart of Darkness. The title in itself is very suggestive, for the noun ‘heart’ is, in a literal sense, characteristic of pure or white substance, and is very distinct, and on a metaphorical level it conveys that the novel works on an emotional scale. On the other hand, the adjective â€Å"darkness† displays something much more inconclusive and equivocal, just like Marlow. Therefore, a reader’s first expectations are rather inexpressible because one is put a half-state, where the clear literal meaning of â€Å"heart† is set against the ambiguity of the â€Å"darkness†. The â€Å"darkness† in the novel works on both the characters and the readers, where it highlights the states of confusion and incomprehension of the mind. It seems upon â€Å"darkness†, things become â€Å"less brilliant but more profound†. This is in reference to the way in which the reader comes to realize that it is the â€Å"white man’s burden† that is truly dark and cruel. Conrad begins Marlow’s journey into the heart of darkness on the Thames, on the yawl, ‘Nellie’ with a short prologue, which contains subtle use of imagery and a brilliant suggestion of the atmosphere that prepares a reader for the prevailing themes of the novel. Each setting in the novel is in fact a microcosm of the larger construction of Heart of Darkness, and a reader is continually reminded by the repetition of the phrase â€Å"brooding gloom†, the noun â€Å"haze†, and the adjective â€Å"dark† that the novel is full mystery and exploration through the impenetrable darkness, as it were. As a reader transgresses through the novel, he or she is continually taken back to the paradoxical title, Heart of Darkness. The title in itself is very suggestive, for the noun ‘heart’ is, in a literal sense, characteristic of pure or white substance, and is very distinct, and on a metaphorical level it conveys that the novel works on an emotional scale. On the other hand, the adjective â€Å"darkness† displays something much more inconclusive and equivocal, just like Marlow. Therefore, a reader’s first expectations are rather inexpressible because one is put a half-state, where the clear literal meaning of â€Å"heart† is set against the ambiguity of the â€Å"darkness†. The â€Å"darkness† in the novel works on both the characters and the readers, where it highlights the states of confusion and incomprehension of the mind. It seems upon â€Å"darkness†, things become â€Å"less brilliant but more profound†. Biography of Henri Rousseau, Self-Taught Post-Impressionist Henri Rousseau (May 21, 1844 – September 2, 1910) was a French painter in the post-impressionist era. He started painting late in life and was roundly mocked in his own time, but was later recognized as a genius and became an influence on later avant-garde artists. His father was a tinsmith, and he had to work alongside his father from the time he was a young boy. As a youth, he attended the local Laval High School, where he was mediocre in some subjects but excelled in creative disciplines such as music and drawing, even winning awards. Eventually, his father went into debt and the family was forced to give up their house; at this time, Rousseau began boarding at the school full-time. After high school, Rousseau attempted to start a career in law. He worked for a lawyer and began his studies, but when he was involved in an incident of perjury, he had to abandon that career path. Instead, he enlisted in the army, serving four years from 1863 to 1867. In 1868, his father died, leaving Rousseau to support his widowed mother. He left the army, moved to Paris, and instead took up a government post, working as a toll and tax collector. Rousseau was known as Le Douanier (the Customs Officer) after his place of work. Essentially self-taught, Rousseaus naive primitive style of painting was widely ridiculed during his lifetime although he later came to be seen as an artist of considerable significance. Print Collector  /  Getty Images That same year, Rousseau married his first wife, Clà ©mence Boitard. She was his landlord’s daughter and, being only fifteen years old, was nine years his junior. The couple had six children together, but only one survived, their daughter Julia Rousseau (born 1876). A few years into their marriage, in 1871, Rousseau took on a new post, collecting taxes on goods coming into Paris (a specific tax called the octroi). Early Exhibits Starting in 1886, Rousseau began exhibiting artwork in the Salon des Indà ©pendants, a Paris salon founded in 1884 that counted Georges Seurat among its founders. The salon was formed as a response to the rigidity of the government-sponsored Salon, which focused heavily on traditionalism and was less than welcoming to artistic innovations. This was a perfect fit for Rousseau, although his work was not displayed in places of prominence within the exhibitions. Rousseau was almost entirely self-taught, although he admitted to having received some â€Å"advice† from Fà ©lix Auguste Clà ©ment and Jean-Là ©on Gà ©rà ´me, a pair of painters from the Academic style. For the most part, though, his artwork came all from his own self-training. He painted nature scenes, as well as developing a particular take on the portrait landscape, in which he would paint a particular scene, then place a person in the foreground. His art slowly began to grow a following, and in 1891, Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!) was exhibited and earned his first major review with serious praise from fellow artist Felix Vallotton. In 1893, Rousseau moved to a studio in the art-centric neighborhood of Montparnasse, where he would live for the rest of his life. Ongoing Career in Paris Rousseau formally retired from his government job in 1893, ahead of his fiftieth birthday, and devoted himself to his artistic pursuits. One of Rousseau’s most famous works, The Sleeping Gypsy, was first seen in 1897. The following year, Rousseau remarried, a decade after losing his first wife. His new wife, Josephine Noury, was, like him, on her second marriage- her first husband had died. The couple had no children, and Josephine died only four years later, in 1892. This one, titled The Hungry Lion Throws Itself on the Antelope, was exhibited once again at the Salon des Indà ©pendants. It was placed near works by a group of younger artists who were leaning more and more avant-garde; one of the future stars whose work was shown near Rousseau’s was Henri Matisse. In retrospect, the grouping was considered the first showing of Fauvism. The group, â€Å"the Fauves,† may have even gotten the inspiration for their name from his painting: the name â€Å"les fauves† is French for â€Å"the wild beasts.† Rousseau’s reputation continued to climb within the artistic community, although he never quite made it to the uppermost echelons. In 1907, however, he received a commission from Berthe, Comtesse de Delauney- the mother of fellow artist Robert Delauney- to paint a work that ended up being The Snake Charmer. His inspirations for the jungle scenes were not, contrary to rumors, from seeing Mexico during his time in the army; he never went to Mexico. The Snake Charmer, 1907. He was struck by the painting and immediately went to find and meet Rousseau. Delighted with the artist and the art, Picasso proceeded to throw a half-serious, half-parody banquet in Rousseau’s honor, called Le Banquet Rousseau. The evening featured many of the prominent figures in the creative community of the time, not for a glittering celebration, but more of a meeting of the creative minds with one another in celebration of their art. In hindsight, it was considered one of the most significant social events of its time. Declining Health and Legacy Rousseau’s final painting, The Dream, was exhibited in 1910 by the Salon des Indà ©pendants. That month, he suffered from an abscess on his leg, but ignored the inflammation until it became too far gone. He was not admitted to the hospital until August, and by then, his leg had become gangrenous. After having surgery for his leg, he developed a blood clot and died from it on September 2, 1910. Poets Wallace Stevens and Sylvia Plath also drew inspiration from Rousseau’s paintings, as did songwriter Joni Mitchell. In perhaps the most unexpected connection: one of Rousseau’s paintings inspired the visual world of the animated film Madagascar. His work continues to be displayed to this day, where it is studied and admired much more than it ever was during his own life.
